Dr. Jason Howell and his friendly team know that receiving braces can be a new and exciting event. However, we also know that you will experience many changes in how you speak, eat, and feel that can affect your entire lifestyle. To help you understand more of what to expect with braces, our orthodontist in Meridian, Idaho, provides some information about braces below. Please call Howell Orthodontics if you have any additional questions about the care and maintenance of your braces.

Braces are an orthodontic treatment option that can help you achieve a straighter and healthier smile. One of the most common orthodontic treatments available, braces work to improve your smile by gradually and gently realigning your teeth. Braces consist of a system of metal brackets, wires, and bands. The brackets are attached to the front of your teeth and are connected to each other through a metal wire and bands. As we adjust the wire, the braces guide your teeth to their ideal positions in your smile. Ceramic braces are also often available, which are the same color as your teeth for a more discreet orthodontic option.

If you have ever wanted your smile to be straighter and more attractive, braces may be right for you. With braces, we are able to correct orthodontic issues such as:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Problems with the bite, including crossbite, open bite, underbite, and overbite

During your treatment, you will visit our office on a regular basis so we can make sure that your braces are adjusted as needed to continue progressing toward a straighter, healthier smile. Our skilled dentist and team will help you reach all of your oral health and appearance goals through personalized, high-quality care. To learn more about braces, please contact our office today.

How Braces Work

Traditional braces consist of brackets that Dr. Jason Howell will bond to your teeth. Archwires connect these brackets and put pressure on them in order to move your teeth into the shape of the archwire. Our orthodontist may also use springs and rubber bands to help move teeth in a certain direction. Braces will loosen your teeth in order to shift their position. Afterward, they hold them in place until your jawbone grows more tissue to support them.

Duration of Treatment

The length of your straightening treatments can last from 1-3 years depending the growth of your mouth and the severity of your bite problems. Each individual is different, and the growth rate of their jaw will react differently to tooth movement. Other factors that affect treatment time include age and whether you use rubber bands and orthodontic appliances as prescribed.

Types of Braces

invisalign girlWe know that no two patients are alike, which is why we offer several different types of braces at Howell Orthodontics. Some of the braces Dr. Jason Howell provides include metal, ceramic, gold, lingual, and in-ovation c and the clear aligners of Invisalign®. There are various types of braces available today. This helps ensure that we can find the treatment that is right for you. The three most common types of braces are:

Metal Braces — This is the most common type of braces. Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel, and thanks to advances in technology and materials, they are now smaller, more comfortable and more attractive than ever before.

Ceramic (Clear) Braces — Ceramic braces are made of a translucent material that is virtually clear. This makes them popular among our patients, especially adults, who are interested in maintaining a more natural-looking aesthetic during treatment. The drawback to ceramic braces, however, is that they are more fragile, and the elastic ties may become discolored between visits to our office.

Clear Aligners — Invisalign®, ClearCorrect, and other similar treatment options are clear aligner systems that use custom-made plastic trays to gradually move your teeth to their proper positions. These aligners are designed through computer simulation to ensure optimal results. Because clear aligner therapy is a nearly invisible way to straighten your teeth, it is a very popular treatment among adult and adolescent patients who would like a more discreet treatment option.

During your initial visit with our team, we will help you determine which type of braces would best meet your personal needs and preferences. For more information and to schedule your consultation, call us today.
