During your orthodontic treatment, several types of issues can arise. If you have an orthodontic emergency, call Howell Orthodontics to discuss the problem with our orthodontist or team. You may need to visit right away or you may be able to do something to alleviate the problem until your next scheduled visit. Our skilled team will know what help you need and how urgent the situation is.

Loose Bracket
Brackets, which are attached to the front of each tooth, can become weak or break if you chew on something hard or sticky. This can cause the bracket to become loose and poke into your cheek, gums, or tongue. Putting orthodontic wax over the bracket can keep it from poking the inside of your mouth. This will make things more comfortable until you visit Dr. Jason Howell.

Broken or Protruding Wire
If a wire sticks out or becomes broken, it can hurt your gums, tongue, or cheek. You may use a pencil eraser to push the wire back into position. If the wire will not move to a better position, put a piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire. This can keep the wire from causing any further injury to your mouth. Do not attempt to cut the wire, as the piece of wire can accidentally be inhaled or swallowed. If a protruding wire has caused a sore, rinse your mouth with an antiseptic rinse or with warm salt water. This will clean the area and reduce discomfort.

We welcome you to contact Howell Orthodontics at 208-893-5151 today to learn more and to schedule an appointment. When you come into our office, our orthodontist in Meridian, Idaho, can repair or replace damaged brackets and wires.
