Traditional braces are an extremely effective method for correcting alignment issues. To prevent all the complications that may arise from a maladaptive bite, Dr. Jason Howell can install braces in your child’s mouth at our orthodontic office.

Does your child feels self-conscious about effect of the impending braces on his or her smile? No worries! Dr. Jason Howell can apply a special dental-grade ceramic coating during the installation process.

Remember, these braces will need daily care and cleaning. If any part of the braces is damaged or there is an issue with tooth decay, this can increase the time it takes to properly correct the alignment of the teeth.

Your child will need excellent oral hygiene habits to prevent cavities and reduce overall wear and tear on the braces hardware. This starts by brushing twice a day. If he or she is having trouble cleaning away plaque and food material from hard to reach places, you can buy an interdental brush on your child’s behalf at most local drugstores and some supermarkets. This has a small, angled head that can help clean material from around the brackets and wires of the braces.

Your child will also need to floss each evening. If he or she is struggling to work the floss strand around a wire or other piece of braces hardware, you can buy him or her a floss threader loaded with waxed dental floss.

Be aware l that certain foods and lifestyle activities can pose a threat to the ceramic coated braces. Chewing gum or sticky foods can easily get stuck in the wires and bands resulting in possible damage. This also includes bad habits like crunching down on hard foods, ice or hard candy or chewing on inedible objects like pens or pencils.

Cutting back on dark beverages and certain foods may also be wise. Your child’s natural tooth enamel is more amenable to stains than the porcelain coating. If the teeth experience significant staining, it might pose a stark contrast to the color of the braces. He or she can still enjoy dark beverages by drinking them through a straw.
